BIO

I entered this life on 9th of June, 2000 as Marion Johanna Stimpfl.  Since I found this name rather unsuitable for a career in the arts I decided to name myself "Marion Wolf" instead - partly as appreciation for my hometown of Wolfsberg as well as a tribute to my father, Wolfgang.

Though full of love, my early childhood was not particularly musical.

According to my mother, in 2006, they put me into the music-branch of the local primary school for one mundane reason: I wouldn't stop singing. (I used to drive my older brother nuts on long drives, singing the same album at the top of my lungs over and over again.) By the time I had finished primary school in 2010 I had learned how to play recorder, guitar, a little bit of french horn, how to sightread music and sing in a group.

I was already 12 years old when I tried the violin for the first time.

As a teenager I discovered my deep love for improvisational music and that the genres that truly resonated with me were jazz and popular music. Early on, through singing, I was able to perform with rhythm sections. By the age of 16 I was playing late-night bar-gigs with friends, writing my first songs, mostly about the awkwardness of teenage-life. At the same time, I had classical music lessons in violin. In 2019, after only 7 years of study, I passed the final music school exam for classical violin with honors.

It was shortly thereafter that I decided to stop playing classical music completely.

2019 was a very successful year for me: I was honored to be the recipient of D'Addario String Foundation's scholarship for the string camp at Musikhochschule München; I was also accepted into a state-funded program for talented young musicians at Gustav Mahler Privatuniversität für Musik in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee, Austria.
I then decided to continue my studies as a full time student in the GMPU jazz-department, majoring in both artistic and pedagocial studies in jazz-violin under Prof. Max Grosch and jazz vocal studies with Prof. Caroline DeRooj. I completed two of the three bachelor degrees in June 2024 with honors, the third one will be done by June 2025.

In January 2024 I passed the GMPU teaching exam with honors and since 2022 I’ve been teaching voice, violin and improvisation to both adults and children in both German and English.

Since I was very young, a great passion of mine has been writing poetry and song lyrics in English, German and Austrian dialect. Some of the authors inspiring me at the moment are Eva Menasse, Rainer Maria Rilke, Christian Kracht and Jean-Paul Sartre.

Musically, I like to describe myself as somewhat of a chameleon.

Since 2014 I’ve been fortunate to be singing and playing in various musical settings, in different styles such as: Funk, Pop, Latin, Acapella, R&B, Classic Rock, Afro, World Music, Singer/Songwriter, as well as Contemporary and Mainstream Jazz.

I am grateful to have been coached by a broad range of artists such as Karen Asatrian, Carole Alston, Michi Erian, Primus Sitter, Daniel Nösig, Klemens Marktl and Rob Bargad.

In February 2024 I debuted my own project: the "Marion Wolf Quartett" with a live concert at Jazzclub Kammerlichtspiele in Klagenfurt. Our first album will be released in May 2025.
